Thames Lido

Our project is working with the Thames Lido. Together, we are ensuring sustainable electricity becomes a reality for Reading

The Thames Lido, based in Kings Meadow, Reading, is one of the best examples of an Edwardian-era swimming bath in the UK. Designed by John Bowen in 1902, the Lido originally opened as a Ladies swimming bath and took its feed water from the Thames via inlet.

The baths closed in 1974, but a public campaign helped to gain the buildings Grade-II listed status in 2004. The site passed onto the team who run the Bristol Lido in 2013, and a painstaking and careful restoration followed. The Lido reopened for business in 2017, and focuses on providing a luxury experience for Reading and the surrounding area.

Working in partnership

Reading Hydro and Thames Lido have been working to move the hydro project forward at pace. We are excited to have our joint letter of intent to explore the opportunity to power the Lido with sustainable electricity generated by our turbines. The support provided with project publicity and hosting space for our AGM’s has been truly invaluable.

“Both of us have recognised the real opportunity to support each other. ”

Sophie Paul, Reading Hydro Chair

By bringing back power generation on the Caversham Weir and returning a piece of Reading’s heritage to use, our businesses have put restoration and sustainability at the heart of what we do. Reading Hydro is delighted to be working together with Thames Lido to further enhance the Thames and the Reading community. We hope our positive and fruitful partnership will continue to grow into the future.

The Thames Lido can be found in Kings Meadow, Napier Road, Reading, RG1 8FR. Please visit their website for further details about the phenomenal swimming and spa facilities: https://www.thameslido.com/
